St. Louis, MO: Edward Jones Dome
St. Louis Recap: By Casey Lipe
The Edward Jones Dome Stadium in downtown St. Louis, MO was the location this past blustery Saturday night, when
18 of our fellow derby drivers competed in the new big thing: AutoCross or DEMOcross as it was dubbed throughout the evening.
The Jones Dome was packed to capacity with a crowd exceeding 70,000 people!! 18 competitors from IL (8), IN (6), MO (2), TN
(2) registered to race the event.
There were 2 heats of 6 laps each and one 10 lap feature that everyone was eligible
to run if they could get their cars put back together and get them out there. It was a monstrosity of mayhem and destruction
throughout the evening. As you saw from some of the photos. Not to be outdone, every single one of the 12 Monster Trucks ended
their nights limping back to their trailers. But smiles were being worn near and far!
Results: Heat 1- 909 Kyle Jossart, TN 787 Michael Davis, TN 88 Mike Brydges, IN 27 Chris Murray,
IL 90 Kent Berry, IL 22 Bryan Dudenhoeffer, IN 06 Dave Sims, IN 57 Charlene Dudenhoeffer, IN 16A JR Rouse, IN
Results: 1: 90, 2: 27,
3: 16A, 4: 22, 5: 06, 6: 909 57 and 787 finished off the lead lap and the hard luck award of the day goes to 88 who busted
his driveshaft and was not able to return to competition.
Heat 2- 184 Danny Reed, MO 55 Roger Murdick,
IN 34 Corey Rettke, MO 14 Vic Whaley, IL 442 Randy Schwartzkopf, IL 67 Troy Rubenacker, IL 69 Wayne
Koontz, IL 17x Nathan Steinkamp, IL B-14 Brian Milner, IL
Results: 1: B-14, 2: 184, 3: 14, 4:
69; 5: 442, 6: 67, 7: 34, 8: 55, 9: 17x This heat was a little goofy for scoring. In mid-heat 2 there was a rollover,
after the rollover they (Monster Jam was making the track calls) sent everyone back to the pits. We *think because they disregarded
the official lights and emergency notifications. (Red flags/lights of which there were one of each and they just didn't
get stopped fast enough so possibly as punishment they were unable to complete the 3rd - 6th laps.
After
the 2 heats they ran the main monster truck event ... Several of the drivers/family/pit crew folks were able to participate
in the opening ceremony which was really neat for them. They helped carry a huge American Flag onto the track and helped wave
it during the playing of the National Anthem. Then the trucks were announced and they ran their races. Then we got back to
the DEMOcross!
17 cars reported to the feature for a scheduled 10 Laps. There was tons of excitement and fast
paced action during this feature. Many times the crowd was on their feet. After watching the tape in S-L-O-W-M-O a few times,
the final results were determined to be:
1- #90 Kent Berry, Carlyle, IL 2- #34 Corey Rettke, Leslie,
MO 3- #16A JR Rouse, Rushville, IN 4- #22 Bryan Dudenhoeffer, IN/STL 5- #55 Roger Murdick, Indy, IN
The rest of pack finished off the lead lap.
Kent really dominated the entire race, he was hooked up and
rolled past everyone out there. One of the highlights of the night was during his heat race when he got significant air and
then took a serious nose dive coming down from that! It was great to watch, but I'm sure not so much fun driving it. Hopefully
he has a hook up on pain killers, I have a feeling he'll need several today. Maybe he can share with Randy Schwartzkopf
too!
There were actually SEVERAL roll overs during the night: 184/Danny Reed (MO); 67/Troy Rubenacker(IL); 27/Chris
Murray (IL); and the big double roll tumble bumble pell mell belonged to 442/Randy SchwartZkopf (IL). Thankfully everyone
was just fine, cars included, and able to continue the racing.
The drivers couldn't have been a more friendly
cooperative group of people. If all derbies went that smoothly, there'd be a lot more people in the sport! You guys are
all awesome!
